Kew Gardens Wedding Photographer and Videographer
Memory Filming is a Brentford studio working as a Kew Gardens wedding photographer and videographer for Asian and multicultural couples. We plan around the glasshouses, the golf buggy portrait slot and the Kew rules on sound and confetti, then cover long South Asian running orders with a photographer and videographer working as a pair.
A Kew Gardens wedding looks easy in the finished gallery and is harder to cover than it appears. Light changes from one glasshouse to the next, and glass roofs throw sound around in ways a recorder does not forgive. Kew also publishes its own rules on music and confetti, which decide what a photographer and videographer can do on the day.
Kew is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a working botanic garden, so a wedding there runs under conditions that most London venues do not have. We wrote this page for couples who already love the idea of Kew and now need to know who can cover it properly. If you want the permit rules and hire fees first, our Kew Gardens wedding photography guide sets them out in detail. This page covers how a day at Kew actually runs and what we do about it.
What makes Kew Gardens different to photograph and film
Most venues give a photographer one main room and a garden. Kew gives you a different building for each part of the day, and each one behaves differently.
Daylight inside the glasshouses is soft and bright, which flatters skin until cloud crosses the glass and the exposure shifts within seconds. After dark the same glass turns into a black mirror that throws back every uplight and phone screen. Photographers who have not worked in a glasshouse before often find that out at the evening reception.
Sound is the bigger problem for film. Hard glass and stone make a ceremony echo, and speeches can be hard to follow on a recording unless the microphones were planned beforehand. Kew applies an 85 decibel limit across the site, and live music has to stay inside the venue you have hired, with the lawn used for Nash Conservatory events as the one exception. A videographer needs to know that early, because it decides where the band stands and where our recorders go.
Kew also stays open to visitors during normal hours, so other people will be in the gardens while you take portraits.
Which Kew Gardens spaces suit which part of the day
These are the spaces couples book most often, and what each one means for the people holding the cameras.
Nash Conservatory
Kew lists the Nash Conservatory for up to 200 guests, and it is one of two venues licensed for civil ceremonies at Kew. Tall windows fill the room with natural light, so we can work without flash for most of a ceremony. There is nowhere to hide in a room like this, so we agree our positions with the officiant or priest before guests arrive. Kew provides a sound engineer and an in house PA system here, which gives us a far better chance of clean audio.
Princess of Wales Conservatory
Ten climate zones sit under one roof, so a drinks reception here has more variety than almost any hotel ballroom. It is also warm and humid, and a cold lens fogs the moment it walks in from outside. We keep equipment bagged and let it settle before the first frame. The space is compact, so we keep group photographs small and use the room for a few quiet minutes with the couple.
The Orangery
The Orangery is a Grade I listed hall with a high ceiling and large arched windows, and it hosts dinner and dancing in the Classic South Asian package. Kew allows a band of up to seven players here including vocals, the largest limit on the site. We photograph the table details early while the room is still clean, because once the dancing starts nobody gets a second chance at a tidy frame.
The Temperate House
The Temperate House is the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world, and it hosts dinner and dancing in the Luxury packages. Kew lists the Luxury package for up to 230 guests at dinner and dance. Tables sit among the planting, and the raised walkways around the edge give a camera height that very few London venues can offer. Bands are capped at five players including vocals. The lighting design decides how the evening looks, so we like to speak with your planner before the plan is final.
Is Cambridge Cottage open for weddings in 2026 and 2027?
Cambridge Cottage is closed for refurbishment from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027, and Kew cannot offer it for weddings during that period. The Intimate package is based there, so intimate weddings in that window need a different space, and dates from September 2027 should be confirmed with the Kew events team.
A lot of photographer pages written before the refurbishment still describe the Cottage as bookable, so check the date on any advice you have read.
Kew Gardens rules that change your photographs and film
Kew publishes its restrictions openly, and most of them touch what we capture.
Confetti of any kind is not allowed, which includes rice, petals and biodegradable options, and fireworks, sky lanterns and flares are also banned. Decorative flames must be LED. Pets are not permitted apart from assistance animals, so a family dog in the portraits has to wait for another venue. Sound readings are taken across the day against the 85 decibel limit. Bands are capped at seven players in the Orangery, five in the Temperate House and four in Cambridge Cottage.
On suppliers, Kew asks couples to choose listed caterers, production companies and decorators, and it keeps a separate recommended list for photographers and videographers. Speak to the Kew operations team before you confirm or pay anyone who is not on its lists, because the venue can refuse a supplier who cannot follow its health and safety policy. You can read the current position on the Kew venue hire pages. We are happy to deal with the Kew team directly on anything they need from us.
Rules change, so confirm each of these with Kew for your date. The events team has the final word.
How we cover a South Asian wedding at Kew Gardens
Kew runs dedicated South Asian packages built around mandap ceremonies. They use the Nash Conservatory, the Princess of Wales Conservatory and a choice of the Orangery or the Temperate House. At the time of writing the Classic package with an Orangery reception is listed at £12,000 plus VAT from Monday to Thursday, £13,500 plus VAT on Friday and £14,500 plus VAT at weekends, excluding bank holidays. The Luxury package with a Temperate House reception costs more. Kew publishes current fees on its South Asian weddings page. These are the days we specialise in.
A Hindu mandap ceremony under glass
Kew welcomes ceremonies of all faiths, including those with a ceremonial flame, and asks for any decorative flames to be LED. The fire for the pheras is something to raise with the Kew events team when you enquire, well before the morning itself. Our job is to plan the ceremony coverage around the rituals, from the arrival and milni through the jaimala, kanyadaan and pheras to the vidaai. A mandap under a glass roof is bright and often backlit, so we expose for faces and keep the ceremony readable. Our Hindu wedding photography and film page explains how we cover each ritual.
Nikkah, walima and Muslim wedding celebrations
Kew supports religious ceremonies of all faiths. A legal civil ceremony in the Nash Conservatory is conducted by Richmond Register Office, so some couples hold that first and the nikkah or celebration afterwards. We cover nikkah and walima days across London and can send a female photographer where the day calls for it. The glasshouses have glass walls, so ask Kew about screening before you plan any separate seating.
Baraat, dhol and flower petals
Kew keeps music inside the venue, with the Nash Conservatory lawn as the exception, and it allows ceremonial drumming only alongside a religious ceremony at the Nash Conservatory, before 6pm and for no more than 10 minutes. Confetti is banned, which covers petals and rice. That makes a long dhol procession and a petal shower hard to plan. We build the arrival around a short, loud welcome on the lawn that we film properly, and we suggest bubbles, which Kew itself offers as the alternative. If dhol matters to you, ask the events team to confirm exactly what is allowed before you book entertainment.
How a photographer and videographer work together at Kew
We recommend photography and film together at Kew. One team plans the route, the positions and the audio once, instead of two teams working around each other in a glass room.
The photographer stays close to faces and candid moments. The videographer holds the ceremony wide and looks after sound, with a recorder on the lectern or beside the officiant and a clean feed from the in house PA wherever one is available. Our wedding videography gives you a film that carries the vows and speeches clearly, because poor audio is very hard to repair once a Kew film has been shot.
Planning portraits during the drinks reception
Kew provides a private golf buggy and a dedicated driver so the couple can leave their guests and photograph the gardens during the drinks reception. The window is short, and Kew is far too big to use all of it.
We choose two outdoor stops near the Nash Conservatory and one indoor fallback in the Princess of Wales Conservatory before the day, and we check the route with the driver. A lehenga with a long dupatta and a heavy sherwani are not easy to walk in, and the glasshouses are warm, so we keep walking to a minimum. From November to February daylight has largely gone by late afternoon, which means the glasshouses, their lighting and the evening reception carry the photographs.
Getting to Kew Gardens with a wedding party
Kew Gardens station is on the District line and the London Overground, and the station is about five minutes on foot from Victoria Gate. The Nash Conservatory sits further inside, so allow extra time for guests in formal clothes. Kew encourages public transport. Its private car park on Kew Green can be hired on weekend dates only for an additional fee, and the other parking nearby is limited and cannot be reserved. We arrive early with our kit and walk the route before the guests do.
What a Kew Gardens wedding costs, and where our fee fits
Venue hire is the largest part of the budget at Kew, and caterers chosen from the Kew lists come on top. Our fee depends mainly on the hours you need and how many ceremonies and events we cover. Photography, film or both also changes it. We quote once we know your date and the spaces you have booked, so the number reflects your actual day. Ask for the running order early, because it tells us how many hours of coverage you really need.
Questions couples ask before booking a Kew Gardens photographer or videographer
Do we need a separate permit for wedding photography at Kew Gardens?
Not for the wedding itself. Photographers and videographers working at your wedding do so under your venue hire. Separate personal photography permits apply to engagement and similar shoots outside a hire, and our Kew guide explains them.
Can we bring our own photographer and videographer to Kew Gardens?
Generally yes. Kew gives a recommended list for photography and videography, and it treats catering, production and decoration as listed supplier categories. Speak to the Kew operations team before you confirm or pay any supplier who is not on its lists.
Which Kew Gardens venue suits a South Asian wedding best?
Kew builds its South Asian packages around the Nash Conservatory for the ceremony, the Princess of Wales Conservatory for drinks, and either the Orangery or the Temperate House for dinner and dancing. The Orangery suits the Classic package and the Temperate House suits the Luxury package. Guest numbers and budget usually decide between them.
Can we have dhol, a baraat and flower petals at Kew Gardens?
Music has to stay inside the venue, apart from the Nash Conservatory lawn, and ceremonial drumming is limited to a religious ceremony at the Nash Conservatory, before 6pm and for no more than 10 minutes. Confetti of any kind, including petals, is not allowed. Ask the Kew events team to confirm your plans in writing.
Can we have a Hindu fire ceremony at Kew Gardens?
Kew welcomes ceremonies of all faiths, including those with a ceremonial flame. Tell the events team about the fire and the mandap setup when you enquire so they can confirm any requirements. Decorative flames such as candles must be LED.
How many guests can a Kew Gardens wedding hold?
Kew lists the Nash Conservatory for up to 200 guests and the Luxury package for up to 230 at dinner and dance. The largest spaces take more in some layouts. Confirm the layout and numbers for your date with the Kew events team.
Do you shoot pre wedding or engagement sessions at Kew Gardens?
We offer pre wedding shoots and can plan one at Kew. Outside a venue hire booking, Kew sells a personal photography permit that has to be bought in advance, with garden entry charged on top. Our Kew guide covers the details.
How early should we book a Kew Gardens wedding photographer and videographer?
Kew lets you hold a date provisionally for 14 days at no cost, then asks for a 50 percent deposit to confirm it, with the balance due eight weeks before the wedding. Summer weekends tend to go first. Send us your held date as soon as you have it and we will tell you if we are free.
