← All writingChoose a London wedding photographer by checking four things: a style you love across two full galleries, coverage that matches every event in your wedding, a written contract with insurance and backup cover, and how at ease you feel on a call. Book 12 to 18 months ahead. For an Asian wedding, confirm they know your ceremonies.
Every portfolio looks good, and that is the problem with choosing a wedding photographer in London. Forty strong galleries tell you very little about who will cope when the Baraat arrives late, the ceremony room is lit by candles and both families want the same group photo at the same moment.
We are Memory Filming, a Brentford studio that has been filming Asian weddings across the UK since 2000. This guide covers what to decide first, what to check in a portfolio, what London prices look like, which questions to ask and what a contract should say. Where Asian and multi day weddings change the advice, we say so.
Who is the best wedding photographer in London?
There is no single best wedding photographer in London. The best one for you is the photographer whose style, experience and manner suit your wedding and who is free on your date.
Directories and award lists help you build a shortlist, but they cannot tell you who will get on with your family at 7am on the morning of the Mehndi. A photographer who is brilliant at a quiet civil ceremony may find a three day Asian wedding with overlapping events much harder. So ask a better question: who is best for this wedding? The checks below help you answer it.
What should you decide before you contact photographers?
Three decisions make every later conversation easier: the style you want, the events you need covered and what you want delivered.
Which photography style suits you?
Most London photographers work somewhere between four styles. Documentary photographers watch and record the day as it unfolds. Traditional photographers lead the posed portraits and family groups. Editorial work is styled and directed, closer to a fashion shoot. Cinematic photography uses light, framing and movement so that stills feel like frames from a film.
Plenty of couples want a mix, and a good photographer will tell you plainly where their strength lies. We blend a cinematic eye with documentary patience. We direct gently when the light or setting needs it, then step back so real moments can happen. For couple portraits we place you in the best light near your venue, ask you to talk to each other and shoot from a distance, so the images look editorial but feel like yours. Before you contact anyone, collect around twenty images you love and look for the pattern across them.
Which events need coverage?
Write down every event you want photographed before you ask for a quote, because coverage is the biggest driver of price. A Muslim wedding can include the Mehndi, Baraat, Nikah and Walima. A Hindu wedding often adds the Haldi, Sangeet, Pheras and Vidaai. A Sikh wedding centres on the Anand Karaj, with the Milni, langar and a reception around it. Some of these fall on different days at different venues, and a quote for one day will not cover the rest.
What do you want delivered?
Choose between edited images only, an album, prints, a short film or a full length film. Couples who want stills and film often find it simpler to book one team, so both crews plan around each other at moments like the Pheras or the first dance instead of competing for the same angle.
How much does a wedding photographer cost in London?
The 2026 Bridebook Wedding Report puts the UK average for wedding photography at £1,484 and expects most couples to pay between £500 and £2,500. London studios that publish packages for full coverage, such as Royal Bindi, quote between £1,500 and £4,000.
Those figures are a guide, not a quote. The Bridebook number comes from a survey of 7,000 newly married and actively planning couples, which you can read in the Bridebook guide to choosing a wedding photographer. Price follows five things: the number of events, the hours at each, the number of photographers, how many images are edited and which extras, such as film, an album or travel, are included. A single venue wedding with one photographer for eight hours and a three day Asian wedding with a team across several venues are different products, even though both are called wedding photography.
When you compare quotes, line them up on the same terms: hours, photographers, edited images, delivery date, overtime rate and travel. Ask what has been left out of a price far below the others. For how this works on Asian weddings in particular, read our guide to Asian wedding photography prices in London.
What should you look for in a wedding photography portfolio?
Ask to see two or three complete weddings from start to finish, not a highlights reel. Check how the photographer handles low light, large family groups and mixed lighting, if the editing looks consistent across venues, and how relaxed the couple and guests appear.
Instagram shows a photographer at their best. A full gallery shows what you will actually receive. Look at the getting ready images, the dark ceremony room, the speeches after sunset and the dance floor. Check that skin tones and colours look the same at a bright venue and a dim one. Notice how many pictures are candid and how many are posed, and decide if that balance suits you.
One couple we worked with had a dark, candlelit ceremony room and a bright glass conservatory for the reception, two very different lighting setups in one day. They had seen a full gallery from a similar wedding we shot, so they knew how both would look before they booked.
For an Asian wedding, ask to see the Baraat, the Mehndi and a long family group session in the same gallery. Large guest lists, bright outfits and moving crowds test a photographer in ways a quiet ceremony does not. You can watch complete wedding stories on our wedding films page.
How do you choose a photographer for an Asian or multicultural wedding?
Choose someone who has covered your tradition many times and can describe the order of events without a briefing. Ask which ceremonies they have photographed, how they handle several venues in one day, and if they can provide a female photographer where your families want one.
London weddings are diverse, and Asian celebrations have a rhythm of their own. The Pheras, the Nikah vows, the Anand Karaj laavan and the Vidaai happen once, often quickly, with relatives standing in the way. A photographer who knows the sequence stands where the moment will happen instead of looking for it.
What changes for Muslim, Hindu and Sikh weddings?
Muslim weddings often run across several days, with the Mehndi, Baraat, Nikah and Walima, and some events keep men and women in separate spaces. Hindu weddings follow a ritual order through the Haldi, Sangeet and Pheras, and the Vidaai closes the day. Sikh weddings centre on the Anand Karaj in the gurdwara, where heads are covered and shoes are removed, with the langar and reception following. Each setting has its own etiquette about where a camera may stand, and a photographer who asks about it before the day has usually done it before.
Do you need a female wedding photographer?
You need a female photographer if parts of your wedding are segregated or if female relatives would be uncomfortable with a male photographer in private spaces, such as bridal preparation, a women only Mehndi or the Walima. Ask early so the right person is free for your date.
Couples searching for a female Baraat or Walima photographer in London usually want the same thing: full coverage without asking anyone to give up their customs. We offer a female wedding photographer for segregated events for exactly this reason.
Can one photographer cover two sides getting ready at once?
Often the groom side and the bride side get ready at the same time in different places. Ask any photographer how they plan to cover both. For larger weddings that usually means a second photographer.
Which questions should you ask before booking?
Send these in writing so you have the answers on record.
- Can I see two or three full weddings from the last year?
- Who exactly will photograph my wedding, and have they shot at my venue?
- What happens if you are ill or cannot attend?
- Do you record to two memory cards at once and carry backup cameras?
- Do you hold public liability insurance?
- How many edited images will I receive, and by what date?
- Who owns the copyright, and what can I do with the images?
- What are the overtime rate, travel charges and cancellation terms?
- How have you handled a late Baraat or an overrunning ceremony?
- Will you go through my timeline and group photo list with me before the day?
A professional answers these without fuss. Vague replies about backup or insurance are your cue to move on.
What should a wedding photography contract include?
A wedding photography contract should name the photographer, the date, venues and hours, list every deliverable, set a delivery date, state who holds image rights and explain deposits, payment dates, cancellation, postponement and illness cover.
Read every clause before you pay a deposit. Check the number of edited images and their format, the delivery time in writing, if final images come without watermarks, the overtime rate, travel costs and what happens if your date moves. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 a supplier must provide a service with reasonable care and skill, and Which? publishes a template letter for a refund on an unsatisfactory wedding service. A signed contract makes it far easier to show what was promised. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
When should you book a wedding photographer in London?
Book as soon as your date and venue are confirmed. Popular London photographers fill 12 to 18 months ahead, and peak summer Saturdays can go sooner. If you are marrying in 2027 or 2028, start enquiring now.
Email two or three photographers at the same time to check your dates, then arrange calls with the ones who reply. Some will hold a date briefly while you decide, though this varies, and a deposit is what actually secures it. A multi day wedding needs several dates held, so list every event in your first message.
How do London logistics affect your photography?
A London wedding often spreads across a central ceremony venue, a park or landmark for portraits and a reception somewhere else. Travel time quietly eats into paid coverage. We build a realistic timeline with every couple that allows for traffic, road closures and Underground delays, so the hours you have paid for are not spent in a taxi.
Ask any photographer to review your timeline before the day, and ask if they have shot at your venue. Light changes between venues and even between rooms in one building, so local knowledge saves time. If you are planning at Hampton Court Palace, Syon Park or Kew Gardens, we have written venue pages and guides for each.
What are the red flags when hiring a wedding photographer?
Most problems are visible before you book.
- Only highlights are available, never a full gallery
- There is no written contract, or it skips cancellation and illness cover
- Answers about backup equipment and insurance are vague
- The person you meet is not the person who will shoot
- The price is far below every other quote with no explanation
- Reviews praise the pictures but say nothing about the day itself
- You are pressed to pay in full before signing anything
- For an Asian wedding, they have no clear idea of the order of ceremonies
Should you book a photographer, a videographer or both?
Photographs give you stills for albums and frames. A film holds the sound of the vows, the dhol and the speeches. Many couples want both, and one team means one point of contact and one timeline. We offer photography and film together, so the two are planned around each other from the first call.
Key takeaways
- Judge a photographer on two full galleries, not a highlights reel.
- Decide your events and coverage before asking for quotes, because coverage drives price.
- The 2026 Bridebook Wedding Report puts the UK average at £1,484, within an expected range of £500 to £2,500. Compare quotes on hours, photographers, images, delivery and overtime.
- For an Asian wedding, check ceremony knowledge, multi venue planning and female photographer availability.
- Get a written contract, proof of insurance and a named backup plan before paying a deposit.
- Book 12 to 18 months ahead, and sooner for peak dates.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book a wedding photographer in London?
Popular London photographers are booked 12 to 18 months ahead, and peak summer Saturdays go first. Start as soon as your date and venue are fixed. If your wedding falls on a weekday or in the off season, shorter notice may work.
How much does a wedding photographer cost in London?
The 2026 Bridebook Wedding Report puts the UK average at £1,484 and expects most couples to pay between £500 and £2,500. London studios that cover full multi event packages publish higher ranges, for example £1,500 to £4,000. Your quote depends on events, hours, team size, edited images and extras.
How many photos will I receive?
A full wedding usually returns 400 to 800 edited images, depending on hours of coverage and the number of events. Bridebook quotes 400 to 700. More is not automatically better, so ask for a curated gallery of strong images rather than every frame.
How long does it take to receive wedding photos?
Many photographers deliver within four to eight weeks, and some by the time you return from honeymoon, though busy periods can run longer. Weddings with several events take longer to edit. Get the delivery date in writing.
Do I need a second photographer?
Often yes for larger weddings, split getting ready locations or receptions that run late. A small single venue wedding is usually well covered by one experienced photographer. Ask how many people will be working on your day and where each will stand.
Do I need a female photographer for a Muslim wedding?
Only if parts of your day are segregated or relatives would prefer it, but ask early so the right person is free for your date. Memory Filming offers a female wedding photographer for these events.
Do all London wedding photographers cover Asian weddings?
No. Many work mainly on single day weddings. Ask which Mehndi, Nikah, Baraat, Sangeet, Pheras or Anand Karaj they have covered, and ask to see galleries from them.
Is a pre wedding shoot worth it?
It gives you practice in front of the camera and shows you how the photographer works before the wedding. Many couples find it settles their nerves. It is optional, so ask if it is included in the package.
