Same Day Edit Wedding Film: Is It Worth It in London?

6 October 2026

Your guests are halfway through dinner. The lights drop and the screen behind the stage comes alive. There you are at nine that morning, with your mother fixing your dupatta and your father pretending he is not crying.

That is a same day edit wedding film, and couples ask us about it every season.

A same day edit (SDE) is a short wedding film, usually 3 to 5 minutes long, that is filmed and edited during your wedding day and played for your guests at the reception.

It looks impressive. It also costs extra and changes how the day runs. We have filmed weddings in London since 2000, so this guide gives you the honest version, including the weddings where we would tell you to skip it.

Short answer: a same day edit is worth it if you have a clear gap between the ceremony and the evening reception, a venue with a proper screen and guests who missed the morning. It is not worth it if the day is tightly packed or if the fee would cut into your main film coverage.

What Is a Same Day Edit Wedding Film?

A same day edit wedding film is a short highlight film cut from footage shot earlier on your wedding day and screened at your reception. It runs about 3 to 5 minutes. A dedicated editor builds it while the rest of the crew keeps filming, so it is ready within hours of the ceremony.

You will also hear it called an SDE, a same day wedding video or a same day highlight. They all mean the same thing.

It is not your full wedding film delivered early. The editor can only use footage that has already been shot, so an SDE usually covers the preparations and the ceremony. It cannot include the speeches or the first dance, because those have not happened yet when the edit is made.

How Does a Same Day Edit Work on the Wedding Day?

A same day edit works by splitting the crew in two. Camera operators keep filming the day while an editor takes the memory cards from the earlier hours, cuts a short story, adds music and colour, and exports the film to the venue screen before the reception moment you agreed in advance.

Here is how the day runs.

  1. Before the wedding. We agree the timeline with you, your planner and the venue. We fix the screening slot and confirm the screen and sound system.
  2. Morning coverage. The crew films the preparations, family moments, details and arrivals.
  3. Footage handover. Cards go to the editor as soon as each block of filming ends, so the cut can start early.
  4. The edit. The editor picks the strongest moments, cuts to music, grades the colour and checks the sound.
  5. Test and screening. The film is exported and tested on the venue system before guests sit down. It plays at the agreed moment.

The editor needs time with the ceremony footage, so the screening slot is almost always in the evening. The closer the ceremony is to the screening, the less time the editor has.

How Long Is a Same Day Edit, and How Long Does It Take to Make?

Most same day edits run 3 to 5 minutes. The edit itself needs several hours of quiet working time once the ceremony footage reaches the editor.

A shorter film often lands harder than a longer one. If the schedule is tight, a clean cut of two to three minutes beats a rushed five.

What Is the Difference Between a Same Day Edit and a Wedding Highlight Film?

A same day edit is made for the reception. A highlight film is made to be rewatched for years, so it gets days of editing and a full sound mix.

Timing is the obvious difference. An SDE is finished on the day. A highlight film arrives weeks later.

Footage is the second difference. The SDE draws on the first half of the day. The highlight film can use everything, including the speeches and the dancing.

Polish is the third. A highlight film has time for careful colour work, layered sound and a considered story. An SDE has hours, so it is simpler by design.

Three related terms cause confusion:

  • A same day reel is a vertical clip made for Instagram. An SDE is built for a screen in the room.
  • A next day edit or teaser is a short film delivered a day or two after the wedding. It has less pressure and often more polish.
  • A full wedding film is the long edit that preserves the whole day.

Ask which one a studio means before you book. An SDE should never replace your highlight film. If a studio offers it in place of one, ask why.

How Much Does a Same Day Edit Cost in the UK?

There is no fixed UK price for a same day edit. It is an add on to your videography package, and the fee depends on the editor, the crew size, the screen setup and how complicated your timeline is.

For context, Bridebook data puts the average UK wedding videographer at around £1,514. A same day edit sits on top of that because it needs a second skilled person, extra equipment and a dedicated block of the day. Quotes vary widely across the UK, and a bargain price usually means a thin team.

We price it per wedding once we know your schedule and venue, and we send a straight price without a call first. Before you sign with anyone, check what the quote includes. Our guide to what a London wedding photography and videography package should include covers how to read a package properly.

  • A dedicated editor on site
  • Screen, projector or LED wall, and sound
  • A music licence for the screening
  • A digital copy of the film afterwards
  • A vertical version for social media
  • Travel and parking for the extra person

What Are the Benefits of a Same Day Edit?

Guests see the morning they missed. Asian weddings often run across several events, and relatives arrive at different points. Guests who join for the reception never see the preparations, the baraat or the ceremony. The SDE gives them that.

The emotion is still fresh. You watch your own day while you are still inside it. Parents and grandparents often react more strongly on the night than they do weeks later.

You see what you missed. You were busy getting married. The edit shows reactions you could not see from the stage, like a father wiping his eyes or a cousin dancing at the baraat.

It gives the reception a centrepiece. A planned screening breaks up the evening and puts every guest in front of the same screen.

You get something to share quickly. If your studio supplies a vertical version, you can send a clip to relatives abroad the next day. Confirm it is included first.

What Are the Downsides of a Same Day Edit?

  • It costs more. You are paying for an extra editor and equipment on top of your main package.
  • It needs a bigger team. The editor cannot also film, so a second skilled person has to be on site.
  • It needs a slot in the programme. Receptions already carry entrances, speeches, dinner and performances. Without a planned slot the screening gets squeezed or dropped.
  • It has less polish. The editor has hours, not days.
  • It carries technical risk. Power, file formats and venue sound can all go wrong. A playback test before guests sit down fixes most of it.

How Does a Same Day Edit Work at an Asian Wedding?

At an Asian wedding, a same day edit works best when the ceremony finishes several hours before the reception screening and when you agree in advance which moments suit a mixed room.

Asian weddings differ from a single afternoon at one venue, and that changes how we plan an SDE. Our South Asian wedding videography guide explains how we cover multi day celebrations, and the same planning applies here.

Timing. Many couples hold the Nikkah or Anand Karaj in the morning and the reception in the evening. That gap suits an SDE well. A Hindu ceremony can run for hours and may still be going when the editor needs footage. When the ceremony and reception run back to back, an SDE becomes very hard, and we say so before you book.

Moments. The baraat, the milni, the jaimala and the parents' reactions give an SDE its energy. Quiet, sacred moments need more thought. We agree with you beforehand which of those belong on a reception screen. Some couples prefer the Nikkah or the laavan stay out of the screening entirely.

Privacy. Some families hold a women only mehndi or bridal preparation where hair and dress are not meant for a mixed audience. We do not put that footage on a reception screen without the bride's agreement.

Presentation. Ask the DJ or emcee to introduce the film. Parents and elders should see it too, so it needs a moment of its own and should not play over conversation.

What Happens if the Wedding Runs Late?

If the wedding runs late, the editor has less time, so the studio shortens the film, uses footage that is already transferred or moves the screening slot. Ask your videographer to explain their plan before you sign.

Ceremonies overrun, and at Asian weddings that is normal. If the ceremony ends an hour late, the editor loses an hour. A good team cuts the opening from the morning footage first, so only the ceremony section is left to finish. You can also agree a fallback. If the film is not ready for the planned slot, it screens later in the evening and is not rushed.

What Do You Need at the Venue for the Screening?

  • A screen, projector or LED wall that every guest can see
  • A sound system the film can plug into
  • Power near the editor's workspace
  • A quiet room or corner with a table for the editor
  • A venue contact who can run playback
  • An agreed file format, tested before guests are seated

Tell the venue early. Some venues charge for AV and some need notice. Check this before you book the SDE, not after.

Can You Post a Same Day Edit on Instagram?

Often yes, but music is the catch. A song cleared for a private screening may not be cleared for public posting, and platforms can mute or remove the video. Ask your videographer how the music is licensed. If you want to post it, ask for a vertical version with music that is safe to share.

Who Should Book a Same Day Edit, and Who Should Skip It?

A same day edit is worth it if your ceremony and reception have a clear gap between them, your venue has strong AV and many guests missed the morning. It is not worth it if the day is packed or if the fee would reduce your main film coverage.

Book it if:

  • Many guests join only for the reception
  • You want a planned moment in the evening programme
  • Your venue has a proper screen and sound
  • Your budget covers it after your full film is secured
  • The studio can show you real SDEs from weddings like yours

Skip it if:

  • The budget is tight and the SDE would replace coverage you need
  • The ceremony and reception run back to back
  • The reception already has a packed programme
  • The studio has no SDE examples to show
  • You would rather put the money into your final film

There is nothing wrong with skipping it. Your full film is the keepsake. Some studios offer a next day teaser, which gives you a quick watch without the day pressure. Ask whether yours does.

Questions to Ask Before You Book a Same Day Edit

  • Can we watch full same day edits from weddings like ours?
  • Is there a dedicated editor, or does a camera operator edit between filming?
  • How many cameras stay on the day while the edit is made?
  • How long is the film, and when will it screen?
  • What happens if the ceremony runs late?
  • What do you need from the venue?
  • Is the music licensed, and can we post the film online?
  • Do we still receive a full highlight film afterwards?
  • What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
  • Is there a backup copy of the film?

Same Day Edit Wedding Film: Frequently Asked Questions

What does SDE mean in wedding videography?

SDE means same day edit. It is a short wedding film made from footage shot earlier that day and screened at the reception.

How long is a same day edit wedding film?

Most run 3 to 5 minutes. There is no fixed length. A tight two or three minute film is better than a rushed five.

Is a same day edit the same as a wedding highlight film?

No. A same day edit is finished within hours and made for the reception screen. A highlight film is edited over days or weeks and made to keep.

How much does a same day edit cost in the UK?

There is no standard price. It is an add on that depends on the editor, crew and screening setup. Ask each studio for a written quote that lists what is included.

Does a same day edit replace the full wedding film?

No, and it should not. It is an extra deliverable. Confirm your package still includes the full highlight film.

Can a same day edit include the whole wedding?

No. It can only use footage shot before the editing deadline, so the speeches, first dance and late evening are not in it.

Do all wedding videographers offer a same day edit?

No. It needs a dedicated editor, the right equipment and experience under pressure. Ask to see complete examples first.
